on recent inspection of my motor (was going to skim it)
i noticed that when i tried to pull the brush out on one side it was very tight which left a score mark on the brush it's self, now it looks to me as though it's had a slight knock which has made the brush hood go out of line. is it possible to straigthen it and which is the best way of doing it???
thanks

They can usually be straightened with a pair of fine pliers, adjust it till the brush has the same feel as the good side.

I have an alignment bar that is ideal to tweak a hood after a small shunt!

Thats a good idea, if it had a tapered section then became parallel, you could tap it through the hoods like a broach and have them straight and true.
