hello

im thinking of getting a nitro-touring car to mess about with and probably race,

just wondering what the opinions are on the HPI cars? mainly shaft drive nitro3 (i think) the R40 would be nice but i think its probably too expensive for what i want it to do.

is it a capable enough car for a beginner/intermediate?

what are its limiting factors?

is there any bits you would recommend to buy straight away? ie bits that more than likely break soon but hop up's are available?

also any cars in around the £200-£250 mark that would include an engine (have radio gear buts its old) and be considerably better than a std. Nitro 3

Cheers Neil

I have never owned an HPI so cannot really help. The most important thing with buying a car is a ready source of parts and help with set-up. If you are going to race try to visit a club and see what cars they run, most racers are helpfull and will talk you to death! If you have a popular car you can usually 'borrow' spares if you break the car at a meeting.

Other cars that come almost ready to run include a version of the NTC3, the Thunder Tiger TS-4n and some Tamiya models. Not all of these are out and out race models as you buy them, but it depends what you want.

I've got a HPI Nitro RS4 3 Type SS which I've owned for about 6 months now! Raced it 3 times in the HPI Challenge and had great fun doing it!

Its taking me a while to get the car setup right and the engine running nicely, (T15) but most of the time it's a cracking little car!

Spares are a must (I actually went out and bought another one just for spares) as I find some parts break quite easily (maybe just my driving!!!)

Chassis' seem to tweak easily too (i'm on my 3rd) but then I have hit things rather hard in places! I'm alot better now that I was, and am looking at an R40 next - top car in my opinion!!!

Any specifics - let me know!
